Did you know? Peels date back to the days of Egypt over 5,000 years ago when Egyptians used acids from fruits and milk as facial peels? So…what is a peel? A facial or chemical peel is a treatment in which an acid solution is used to remove the damaged outer layers of the skin. If you haven’t heard, Pevonia® Botanica introduced an all NEW in-spa professional treatment last week; the YouthRenew™ Hydra-Glow Peel! This ultra-hydrating new treatment, provides your skin with a smoother texture, minimized wrinkles, and lightened hyperpigmentation. Truly emerging your skin for a healthy, radiant, #BeautyFull glow! I had the pleasure of getting to experience this treatment last week, and wanted to share some important information on peels and my take on this exciting new spa experience.

…I know what you’re thinking.

The first time I heard “peel” I thought…yikes how can this possibly be exciting? I don’t want my skin falling off of my face? Gross. While the process does remove the top layer of the skin, the peel is properly (and gently!) exfoliates your skin to stimulate the formulation of new cells to provide your skin a more even tone and clearer, brighter skin. Your skin is not literally falling off your face, and there is nothing to fear with this process…I promise. So…what’s the big deal? Why Peel?

Who doesn’t want to dive into a retreat for body, mind and spirit, sprinkled with a little mystery? The Phoenician in Scottsdale, Arizona believes in an ancient legend where a mythical phoenix rose from the ashes of its past to be reborn and celebrate renewal. This power of transformation, whether of the body, spirit or mind, is inherent to the philosophy of their Centre for Well-Being. Ideal during the holiday season, their spa rituals lead to inner calm, self-revelation and harmony with one’s own natural rhythms.

Their Botanical Rejuvenating Stem Cell Facial gives skin a boost of life. Infused with a blend of Argan and Comfrey Stem Cells, and supercharged with Collagen, Retinol and Elastin, this facial starts working quickly to reduce lines and wrinkles.

Take some time to think of visions of a better you while relaxing at their Meditation Atrium or one of their outdoor patios. What do you want to accomplish this season? What do you want to stay away from? Where are you lacking boundaries that perhaps invade your inner peace?

You may think there is no need for sunscreen during the winter months; yet, experts disagree.  Combine the need for some color during the winter months with incredible protection and you’ll have YouthRenew™ Tinted Cream SPF 30, an extraordinary 5 in 1 Daily Defense Cream. It’s age-defying and ultra-hydrating, while providing broad spectrum protection, healthy luminosity and a tinted, flawless look. Infused with Collagen, Vitamin C, Olive Extracts and the new Flash Action Unisphere, YouthRenew™ Tinted Cream combines the benefits of BB, CC and DD creams to leave skin with an immaculate finish. And, the added subtle natural tint reduces the appearance of enlarged pores and brightens skin throughout the day.

I leave you with the words of Marilu Henner, “Being in control of your life and having realistic expectations about your day-to-day challenges are the keys to stress management, which is perhaps the most important ingredient to living a happy, healthy and rewarding life.”

While plastic surgery and Botox have become the norm, there are millions of people who don’t want to go under the knife or needle to preserve their appearance. There are plenty of ways to look 10 years younger, and the good news; it is never too late to end bad habits.

Scientists now believe we have the power to slow down 40 percent of how we age, especially when using authentic botanicals like Pevonia in our daily regimen. Dr. Christopher Calapai, D.O. is a NYC Osteopathic Physician Board Certified in family medicine and anti-aging medicine. Despite his busy schedule, we were able to get him to provide his Top 10 Must-Haves when saying bye-bye to sad aging effects, and hello to youthful, healthy aging:

1. Stop smoking.
“Cigarettes contain some 40,000 toxins, each deposited directly into the DNA of skin cells each time you take a drag,” says Dr. Calapai. “Numerous studies in identical twins have found that smokers look ten years older than non-smokers. That evidence is profound in lines around the eyes.” Talk to your doctor about methods to help you quit.

2. Flex your face.
“Facial muscles are just like body muscles,” he says. “The more you use them, the stronger they get and the less likely they are to sag and atrophy.” Try this quick cheek workout to help build up sagging facial muscles: look in a mirror, smile as broadly as possible while keeping your lips closed and mouth corners turned up. Try to make your mouth corners touch your ears. Next, wrinkle your nose and see your cheek muscles move upwards. Stay like this for a count of five, then relax. Repeat 10 times.

3. Consider acupuncture.
Half of Hollywood is allegedly hooked on the face-saving, radiance-boosting power of cosmetic acupuncture. According to experts, it stimulates skin cells to lay down new collagen fibers under wrinkles, ‘filling them in’ literally while also toning different muscles to restore glow. The added bonus is that most cosmetic acupuncturists treat underlying problems that could be causing your skin to look older, such as insomnia and bad digestion.

4. Have more sex.
Having sex at least three times per week can make you look up to 10 years younger. According to Dr. Dr. Calapai, having more sex is the next best thing you can do after exercise to look younger because it also helps you to naturally release more growth hormones and it’s been proven that having more sex can help you live longer.

5. Avoid sugar.
“Too much sugar in your diet will lead to an age accelerating process in your body known as glycation and glycation does damage to the collagen in your skin making you lose skin elasticity causing wrinkles to appear,” he affirms. Something as simple as cutting out sodas and sweet juices makes a difference fast.

6. Exfoliate your skin regularly.
“Exfoliation increases dermal volume, making skin look less wrinkly. It will also help fade brown spots. You can use a physical exfoliant like a scrub, or a chemical exfoliant, such as a glycolic,” says Dr. Calapai. We say our Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser fits the bill, perfectly.

7. Start intermittent fasting.
The two main reasons why intermittent fasting makes you look younger is because intermittent fasting naturally increases your human growth hormone which amps up the production of collagen for younger looking skin. Dr. Calapai explains that, “intermittent fasting induces autophagy where the cells in your body repair themselves to make a newer much healthier cell to prevent aging.”

8. Exercise.
You may think you carry your age in your face, but people “guess” your age by how you move. The youthful figure is thin, muscular, flexible, and strong. Your exercise program should include lots of cardio (this allows you to move around without huffing and puffing (a definite “geezer” giveaway). Also be sure to strength train with free weights, and add in some stretching to preserve flexibility.

9. Improve your posture.
One of the biggest giveaways for looking old is a curved back with slumpy sitting, and shoulders that ride up too high with respect to your neck. Fix your posture by thinking of the top of your head as a flat surface and then try to get that flat surface as tall as you can. Consciously push down your shoulders. Do this as you walk and sit. Take a “posture check” as often as you think about it during the day. Young people may not have perfect posture, but correcting your posture will make you look more youthful.

10. Eat more oily fish.
Eating fish rich in Omega 3 is optimal but if you don’t like fish take a high-grade fish-oil supplement. Dr. Calapai says that, “none of us consume enough essential fatty acids, which as well as helping our brains to function more smoothly are considered vital to keep skin-cell-membranes in good health and therefore stop the skin from getting too dry.”

Have you ever thought about cleaning your make-up brushes? Yeah, no one has. We always want to buy expensive face cleansers to make sure our faces are cleaned properly and have no make-up residues, but rarely anyone ever thinks about the fact that the make-up brushes we use every day have layers of face oils, old make-up, bacteria, and many other nasty things, that you put on your face again and again every day. All of these things can cause serious problems to your skin, such as clogged pores, irritation, viral infection spread, etc.

Not to mention that a dirty and layered with old make-up brush makes it hard to apply your new make-up, and you eventually throw away your expensive brush and go out and spend money on a new one.

If you want to stop spending money on new make-up brushes this often and want to prevent  skin problems, I would strongly recommend cleaning them. And there are some very simple ways you can do it at home, and without having to spend money on a make-up brush cleanser, and it will not take up much of your time, and it will be harmless to your brushes.

For these simple tricks you can either use some things that are already in your home, or you can buy them, and they will last you a very long time. I am talking about baby shampoo and extra virgin olive oil, and essential oils. Yes, these are the magic cleansers you need for your make-up brushes. They are efficient and harmless for your brushes, and just as delicate as them.

One thing you can do is simply put a little baby shampoo in your hand, or in a bowl, mix with water and swirl your brushes in the shampoo. When it gets foamy and you think it is done, rinse the brush under running warm water. You can repeat this until the rinsing water is clear. You will see how dirty your brushes are and what you have been touching your face with every day. This is a technique that I learned from BestLondonCleaners Finchley.

Another thing you can do is similar, only you mix water with extra virgin olive oil in a bowl. And again, swirl the brushes and rinse under running warm water.

It is important to leave your brushes on a towel to dry overnight.

What else you can do is make your own make-up brush cleanser, and take care of your make up brushes every day, to prevent them from getting very dirty, and to prolong their lives. For a make-up brush cleanser, all you are going to need is some water and essential oils. Get a small spray bottle and put 10 drops of tea tree oil, 5 drops of an essential oil of your choice (depending on what scents you like) and fill the bottle with water. Then every day after applying your make-up you can spray your brushes with this and wipe them off with a paper towel. Add this to your everyday make-up routine, it does not take a lot of time, and you will get to enjoy your clean brushes for a very long time.

I am a fan of using natural and safe products when it comes to my beauty tools, and I would recommend you using the ones listed above as well, instead of spending money on store-bought cleansers for your brushes. You can use baby shampoo to clean other tools as well—eyelash curler, combs, etc.

You will surely notice how much better the skin on your face will feel when you use only clean brushes. It is easy and quick to clean them, so do it once every month or every two months. You will notice that your skin breaks out less frequently, and that it does not feel dirty all of the time. Plus there are a lot of infections that can be caused due to dirty make up brushes—pink eye, herpes. By using dirty brushes you are applying germs and bacteria to your face daily. A clean brush will not cause acne break outs or other skin infections. A clean brush will do its job properly—apply your make up without adding bacteria to your skin. A clean brush will not irritate your skin and make it more sensitive

We should pay more attention and care for our make-up tools as much as we care about our faces. Because they are linked directly. Plus these tricks are very harmless to your brushes and to your face as well. They have no irritating or harsh chemicals in them, and will not damage the softness of the bristles.
