You made it…the first “unofficial” weekend of the summer is finally here, and warm weather is finally upon us! If you’re like me, you’re probably planning on spending lots of time outdoors this weekend soaking up the sun at the beach, a family cookout, or just spending time outside working in the garden.
Be sure to kick off Summer by practicing safe skincare habits and using caution when spending long hours outdoors. According to the American Cancer Society, 5.4 million skin cancers are diagnosed each year in the United States alone. At Pevonia, we’re here to help you reveal your most #BeautyFull self and stay safe under the harsh summer sun. Here are a few helpful hints to kick off this sunsational season with Pevonia:
Wear sunscreen. This should go without saying, but there are so many people that hit the sun without proper protection…either by choice, or simply because they’ve “forgotten” the most important step to having fun in the sun is keeping your skin safe. Don’t be the person to make the ridiculous excuse that sunscreen isn’t necessary when you’re getting a “tan”, because the sun isn’t out, or because you don’t burn…because EVERYONE needs sunscreen, and there should never be an excuse not to lather up.
Sun Tip: Experts recommend lathering up before getting dressed to avoid missing spots on your skin. Be sure to use at least a shot glass worth of sunscreen on your body, and a spoonful on your face. Be sure to apply sunscreen every 2 hours or after swimming or sweating to ensure optimum protection.

Pack Skin Protection
Just because you’ve lathered up before heading out, doesn’t mean you can choose to forget the skin you’re in while having fun outdoors. Be sure to pack proper sun protection along with you. Here’s a checklist of sun essentials to bring along while spending time outdoors:
- Wide Brimmed Hat
- Umbrella or Sun Tent
- Cover Up
- UVA/UVB Protected Swim Gear
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!
This may also seem like common sense, but your body (& and your skin!) need proper hydration year ‘round…and even more in the summer months. Your body releases more sweat in the summer, which can dehydrate your skin, and even sometimes making it more prone to sunburn. If you do get a nasty burn, drinking water can help rejuvenate and recover your skin. Be sure to bring along plenty of fresh water, and avoid beverages containing sugar or alcohol. If you are planning to drink alcohol, be sure to ramp up your water intake to avoid dehydration!
Take a Time Out
Don’t be afraid to take some time away from the sun and seek shelter or shade if you’re spending all day outside…your skin will thank you. Spending a long day at the beach? Take a time out, get out of the water, and enjoy a cool breeze under the shade of your umbrella with a nice long beach nap. Spending time outside at a family cookout? Be sure to head inside or seek shade during your Memorial Day meal and give your skin a rest. Try to find small opportunities for shade or shelter especially between the hottest hours of the day: 11:00am and 4:00pm, and remember to take the time to reapply sunscreen while taking a time out.
Share Your Screen
Most importantly, be sure to spread the importance of proper sun protection to family, friends, and co-workers this Memorial Day. Did you know that regular daily use of an SPF 15 or higher sunscreen reduces the risk of developing melanoma by fifty percent? Spend a few moments talking to your children about how to properly apply sunscreen, and find activities to help them seek shade throughout the day.
Memorial Day Party Tip: Be sure to host a sunscreen station at your party to give guests the opportunity to lather up and protect.
