Tis the season for everyone to announce their New Year’s resolutions. Have you given thought to what yours will be this year? Many adults make a New Year’s resolution but nearly 30% of them discard them within the first week. But why is it so difficult to stick to your resolution? Here 6 reasons why they quit and how you can solve these problems:

  1. One of the major problems is making the resolution too broad. For example, I want to eat healthily, lose weight, or workout more. It is okay if that is your resolution, but you need to make it more specific. What exactly will you do day to day to accomplish your goal? For example, if your goal is to eat healthily, pre-plan your meals so you are not tempted to stop somewhere to get a quick cheap meal.
  2. Having a daunting resolution can also make sticking to it difficult. You become too overwhelmed. Instead of setting a resolution to run a marathon, first, start off with running a 3k race and work your way up.Whereas this is a great resolution, and you can definitely succeed at it, appropriate training is needed to achieve your end goal.
  3. Creating your why in a resolution is very important and also, very personal. This is a tool you can use for in any instant that you feel like you can’t stick to your plan. Ask yourself: “What is my why?” Why are you setting this resolution? Are you doing it for yourself? your health? your kids? Whatever it may be, remember it when you need an extra push.
  4. Your own commitment level can play a huge factor in whether or not your stick to your resolution. You need to make sure the process is enjoyable for you; choose something you want to do. If you want to live a healthier lifestyle, find an activity you enjoy doing and find healthier food options you find tasty. This way you look forward and are more willing during the process of creating the new lifestyle change.
  5. Don’t let the resolutions ever end. Many people who set new year’s resolutions will stop once they reach their goal. In order to make sure you don’t relapse back into your old habits, you need to continue on the journey. Creating new challenges and goals to achieve. The longer you continue with the positive behavior eventually it will lead to a permanent change in your life.
  6. Some people will get frustrated while actively participating in their new year’s resolution, so make sure you are keeping track of your progress. If it is healthier eating, keep a food journal. If it’s fitness, track how much weight you can lift or how much weight and inches you have lost. You can do this by taking progress pictures every 3 months.

People who are successful are more likely to view their resolution as a permeant change or a lifestyle change. You need to make sure the change is not too daunting of a task by setting goals week by week; this is also a great way to tracking progress. You will meet the goals and feel accomplished giving you the motivation to keep moving forward. Also, make the process of change as enjoyable as you can by choosing activities you like to do. Always remember that anything you set your mind to, you can do. Bad days will happen; know that it is normal and okay. Pick the pieces up and get back on track the next day.
